Do you feel that your teeth from either jaws are not closing together in the right way? If so, you’re in need of occlusal adjustment, a procedure that gets rid of the tiny imperfections in the size of the teeth and allows them to come together perfectly. Dr. Roland Elazegui, DMD, has treated numerous patients who needed occlusal treatment and is one of the best dentists in Milpitas, CA.
How disadvantageous is an ‘off’ bite?
When the teeth do not come together perfectly, they may pose the following problems:
- It could lead to severe pain in the neck, jaws and head.
- The pressure isn’t distributed equally on all the teeth, which could lead to the wear of a few teeth.
- Sometimes, the patient may develop bruxism, a condition where one subconsciously grinds the teeth and clenches the jaw.
- Over time, the patient may develop TMD (Temporomandibular joint disorder), where one feels a difficulty and pain while moving the jaws.
Diagnosis and treatment
During the diagnosis, the doctor begins with a visual examination of the jaw and teeth to check for any signs of occlusal misalignment. To get a better idea of the condition, the dentist will ask you to bite into a thin piece of mylar paper. The specialty of mylar paper is that when a lot of force is applied on a specific point on the paper, it changes color at that spot. This way, it is easier to determine where the teeth are meeting and where they are not.
The dentist will then gently buff the teeth which have left a mark on the paper. This is done to remove a small layer of enamel so that the teeth from the lower and upper jaws meet in their anatomically correct position. Call us today to schedule an appointment with our highly experienced dentists.
