Veneers Q & A

by Roland Elazegui, DMD

What are porcelain veneers?

Veneers are a cosmetic procedure where Dr. Elazegui applies a thin shell of tooth-colored material over the surface of your teeth. These shells are bonded to your visible teeth to completely change the appearance of their size, length, shape, or color.

Several materials are used to make veneers, but porcelain has the most natural look and feel compared to regular teeth. Porcelain veneers also resist staining better than other materials.

You care for porcelain veneers as you care for natural teeth. The better you care for your veneers, the longer they last. When well-cared for, veneers typically last between 7 to 10 years before needing replacement.

Who is a candidate for porcelain veneers?

Porcelain veneers can fix several aesthetic issues in the mouth, including:

  • Wear and tear
  • Worn enamel
  • Uneven teeth
  • Permanent staining
  • Inconsistent color or contour

A small amount of enamel is permanently removed to adhere the veneer to your tooth. So, if you smoke or have weak teeth, you may not be a good candidate. Similarly, if you have dental conditions like decay, periodontal disease, or missing teeth, you might need additional treatment before placing porcelain veneers.

What can I expect during my appointment?

Porcelain veneers typically require three appointments.

During your initial consultation, Dr. Elazegui evaluates your teeth and oral health to determine if veneers can correct your cosmetic issues.

Your second appointment prepares the teeth for your veneers. Dr. Elazegui removes a small amount of enamel approximately the same thickness as your veneer from the surface of your tooth. This process ensures no bulk is added to the structure of your tooth when the veneer is applied.

After removing your enamel, impressions are made of your mouth to create your porcelain veneers.

Two to three weeks after your impressions are taken, your veneers are ready for placement. Dr. Elazegui shapes and trims each veneer to achieve a perfect fit and natural look. Your teeth are cleaned, polished, and etched, then the veneers are bonded firmly in place using special light-activated cement.

Depending on the number of veneers you’re getting, your third appointment can take several hours.
